After many attempts I was able to build a linux kernel 3.x that runs on the IGEPv2 (RC4). I am using the latest kernel version 3.18.2 (as of 2015/Jan/16). All the instructions needed to compile it are available at the page.
I also included information on how to compile a newer version of the U-Boot boot loader required to load these newer kernels. The old X-Loader + U-Boot don't work with kernel 3.x because they don't load the device tree blob (DTB) files.
Read more at the IGEPv2 Linux Kernel 3.18.2 page.
